We are pleased to announce the celebration of the 3rd International Symposium on Gamification and Games for Learning (GamiLearn’19) on 22 October 2019, in Barcelona (Spain), as a co-located event of CHIPLAY, the international and interdisciplinary conference (by ACM SIGCHI) for researchers and professionals across all areas of play, games and human-computer interaction (HCI). This symposium is open to contributions from researchers, practitioners and industry in the application of gamification or games in learning environments.

Gameful and playful experiences have been positively shown as a technique to motivate students and enhance their learning process. This topic has gained great interest in both academia and industry, as reflected by the amount of academic publications in the recent years, especially those showing case studies, hands-on experiences, or startups specialized in gamification and games for educational purposes.

The 3rd International Symposium on Gamification and Games for Learning (GamiLearn’19) aims to cover all aspects of gameful and playful approaches for learning, including user studies, design frameworks, techniques and strategies, methodologies, tools and applications, ecosystems, analysis and assessment, personalization approaches, systems integrations, data management, architectures, innovations to market, as well as any work in progress. Our main goal is to bring together stakeholders for exchanging ideas and experiences and encouraging networking between academia and industry.

Speakers in 2019

Dr. Ioanna (Jo) Iacovides

Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of York, UK

Her research interests lie in Human Computer Interaction with a particular focus on understanding the role of learning within the player experience, and on investigating complex emotional experiences in the context of digital play. In addition, she is interested in exploring how games and playful technologies can created for a range of persuasive purposes, such as education and behaviour change. She has received awards for a work on examining reflection and gaming (best paper, CHI PLAY 2018), designing and evaluating persuasive games (honourable mention, CHI 2015) and for the game Resilience Challenge, which encourages healthcare practitioners to consider how they adapt safely under pressure (first prize, 2017 Annual Resilience Healthcare Network symposium).
