Dear PhD students, UOC professors and researchers,

We are pleased to invite you to the Doctoral School Workshop “Academic Writing” on 6th October 2015 in Room -1B of the Castelldefels Building. The workshop will be led by Dr. Susan Frekko, who holds a Ph.D. in linguistic anthropology from the University of Michigan and is a specialist in academic publishing.

The workshop will run from 9:00 to 14:30 with two pauses of fifteen minutes from 10:45 to 11:00 and from 12:45 to 13:00. The session will be in English, as will be the sample data and exercises.

The aim of this workshop is to provide guidance to the participants in the process of publishing an academic paper in an indexed journal. The workshop will provide support to doctoral students so that they can submit a paper to an indexed journal by the end of the consulting period.


Please note that space will be limited to 20 participants, so advance registration is required.

Since we have noticed that many of the people registered for previous workshops did not attend to the sessions, we would like to remind you that the workshop is subject to time, economic and organizational constraints. Please complete your registration ONLY if you will attend the workshop.

Stage 1:

Workshop 1: Planning a scientific paper from qualitative data.

This workshop is meant for doctoral students and other researchers. It focuses on the process of planning and preparing a scientific paper for an indexed journal. Participants must bring samples of their data, in addition to ideas and questions about the process of developing an academic paper. The session will be divided into a theoretical part and a practical one, in which participants will work together on their projects. Topics discussed include: literature review, data coding, developing a unique contribution, the style and structure of a scientific paper, journal selection. The examples will be based on qualitative research; however, many of the concepts can be applied to quantitative and technical studies as well.

Stage 2:

Homework: Participants commit to writing a paper draft based on the work they have done in Workshop 1. This draft will be submitted to their thesis supervisors and will be subject to their comments and recommendations. Before submitting the paper to the thesis supervisor, participants will work in pairs and exchange their papers. Papers are due to supervisors on 21st December 2015. Supervisor feedback is due to authors on 1st February 2016.

Stage 3:

Workshop 2: Revising and submitting a scientific paper to an indexed journal.

This workshop will focus on revision strategies. After receiving feedback from their supervisors, students should begin revisions before Workshop 2. They must bring their paper drafts for collaborative work, having identified a particular challenge they would like to focus on. The workshop will include a practical section in which participants will address specific challenges in their articles, with feedback from Dr. Frekko and the rest of the group. The workshop will also address correspondence with journals and the “revise and resubmit” process. Workshop 2 will take place in early March 2016.

Stage 4

Dr. Frekko will read the revised papers and offer detailed individual written feedback. Papers will be due to Dr. Frekko in early April 2016 and she will provide feedback by mid-May 2016.

Stage 5

The participants will submit their papers to an indexed journal. Participants are expected to submit by 30th June 2016.
