Welcome and presentation

We welcome you to the 2nd PhD Research Symposium in Health Sciences and Biomedicine organized by the Doctoral School and hosted by the Faculty of Medicine, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM).This event is to be celebrated on 22 May 2020.

During this meeting, the Doctoral Programs from our University with merging interests in the area of Health Sciences and Biomedicine will celebrate a one-day Symposium to strengthen their commitment to broaden collaborative strategies in doctoral education and research.

Why this meeting?

The Symposium has the educational aim of preparing our PhD candidates for an excellent performance in critical exposition and data discussion both for their thesis defense and future scientific activities. We expect original research and lively discussions on a broad range of topics within Health Sciences and Biomedicine, from basic and applied research to clinics, and from patient care to population health.

This innovative event will be an optimal forum for our PhD candidates to showcase their research and foster communication and potential collaborations between attendees from different laboratories and areas of expertise. PhD candidates will have the opportunity to interact not only with their peers but also with researchers, clinicians and health carers at different stages of their career.

Who can participate?

The doctoral candidates who are at least in their second academic year, are invited to present a scientific communication including the main hypothesis, objectives and results of their thesis projects. MSc students and doctoral candidates in their first year are welcome for registration and meeting attendance. Please note that registration is free but mandatory for all participants.

In addition, for this 2nd edition of the Symposium we expect the participation of international doctoral candidates, which will broaden even more the field for collaborations and networking. We are eager to involve in all activities our international guests. Thank you for taking part of this event. You are more than welcome at UAM!

Format of the meeting

The Symposium will consist of both moderated poster sessions and oral communication sessions by PhD candidates, providing ample time for discussion both within and outside the scientific sessions. In addition to the regular presentations, an invited keynote lecture on transversal skills and career guidance will be delivered for young researchers. We are happy to announce that this year the lecture will be delivered by Prof. Daniel Wilson from Harvard University. Please note that the meeting will be held in English.

Finally, we would like to sincerely thank all the participating institutions and collaborators that will make this event possible.

We truly hope you will enjoy the Symposium,

The Organizing Committee

The plenary lecture of the 2nd PhD Research Symposium in Health Sciences and Biomedicine will address a topic dealing with transferable skills that may be of interest to all the attendants independently of their field of research

We are very pleased to announce that our invited speaker for the 2nd edition of the Symposium will be Dr. Daniel Wilson, who will deliver the talk "Leadership in a Complex World".

Daniel Wilson is the Director of Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE), where he is also a Principal Investigator, a Lecturer at the HGSE, Faculty on the Doctorate for Educational Leadership at HGSE, and the Educational Chair at Harvard’s “Learning Environments for Tomorrow” Institute – a collaboration with HGSE and Harvard Graduate School of Design. His teaching and writing explores the inherent socio-psychological tensions – dilemmas of knowing, trusting, leading, and belonging -- in adult collaborative learning across a variety of contexts. Specifically he focuses on how groups navigate these tensions through language, routines, roles, and artifacts.
