Seminario: Bulk growth of unidirectional 1, 3, 5-triphenylbenzene (3PB) single crystal for scintillator device fabrication and fast neutron detection

Organic scintillation crystals are noted for their high light output efficiency.

1,3,5-triphenylbenzene (3-PB) has been identified as a crystal for potential use as a neutron- gamma radiation discrimination.

3-PB crystal has better scintillation properties and high radiation stability compared to the other crystals used for the same purpose.

Bulk 3PB crystal has been grown by Unidirectional Sankaranarayanan-Ramasamy (SR) method of size 30 mm diameter and 40 mm length. The quality of the initial chemical was confirmed through NMR and CG measurements. Cell parameters of the grown 3PB crystal were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction, it belongs to orthorhombic crystal system. Fluorescence emission spectrum was recorded at 360 nm. Thermogravimetric (TG-DTA) measurement was performed to the title compound, and it was stable up to 164°C. Growth pattern and the surface defect were examined by the optical microscope and it reveals the regular shapes of etch pits which are in triangular shape. The wide range gamma and neutron energy responses were measured.
